Plantar fasciitis is an inflammatory condition occurring on the sole of the foot (the plantar surface), caused by fiber breakdown in the vertical band of collagenous connective tissue (fascia) that runs from the toes to the heel bone (calcaneous). It occurs when the longitudinal arch of the foot becomes overstressed and tight, and often the pain is particularly felt at the anterior portion of the heel. Usually we experience the pain when we stand up after a long period of sitting or upon rising from bed. This is due to the fact that the fascia shortens when we are not upright to keep it stretched, and the initial force of standing on the now inflamed, shortened fibers is painful.
The mechanical causes of this problem are complex and best resolved by seeing a doctor, who might suggest the use of orthotics to help maintain a healthy arch and allow fascial healing. However, massage and facilitated stretching of the area also help to relieve pain and promote healing.
